Natalia was working as a DNA analyst assigned to work only cold cases to cover for the fact that she was working undercover for the FBI to build a case against Horatio Caine and his team. Nat befriends the CSI's and only reported information to make Horatio and the team look good. It was later revealed that the negative informatioin was being revealed was by another source. At the end of her undercover assignment with the FBI she leaves them and joins the MDPD becoming a CSI level 1. It was later revealed that she had first met Horatio Caine in 1997 when she had copied a drop of blood for him.
Natalia was married to Nick Townsend but divorced him because he was abusive and when he was killed Natalia was accused of the murder but was found innocent when it was revealed that another man had killed him to get his wife's earrings back that Nick had stolen from another crime scene.
In season 8 Natalia and Ryan Wolfe go into a house with a meth lab and it explodes while they are in there. Nat is trapped beneath debris and tells Ryan to go on without her but Horatio shows up and he and Ryan get her to saftey. Though Nat tells everybody that she is okay she experiences hearing loss from the ordeal which almost cost her her life in a later case when a young boy sneaks up behind her with a samurai sword. Ryan had to yell at her to get her attention just in time. Walter Simmons and Ryan then convince her to go to the doctor where it is discovered that she needs a hearing aid. Her hearing aid helps her in a later case where it picks up a signal jammer hidden in a plant. In the same episode, she discovers that Eric Delko is wearing a wire and agrees to keep his secret, though she refuses to go out with the rest of her co-workers later that same day because Eric would be there.
In the season 9 opener Natalia falls victim to a poison attack on the lab but is saved by Horatio's intervention. She wakes up to find Jesse laying on the floor beside her and tires unsuccessfully to revive him much to her devestation.
Later Nat goes undercover to investigate a psychic that was linked to a case where a man dreamed about a murder victim. The psychic discovered her listening device that she was using to talk to Horatio and Ryan and drugged her using a laced candle that Natalia breathed in. The psychic then had her drive to a warehouse to led Horatio and Ryan away from her so she could escape. At the warehouse Nat is "dreaming" of her abusive ex-husband and fires her gun on Horatio and Ryan. She doesn't remember any of it after the ordeal and Ryan and Horatio agree not to tell her or anyone else.
Later Nat gives a speech warning students at Miami Dade University to be on the look out for alleged cyber killed Patrick Clarkson. While walking to her car after the speech she is kidnapped by Clarkson who begs her to prove his innocence. She manages to get loose and she fights back causing the van they were in to wreck. Clarkson feld the scene and Horatio rescused Nat.
At the end of the ninth season Horatio is shot in the stomach while Nat is locked in the trunk of a car that was then rolled into the ocean. Despite his injury, Horatio jumped in and saved her.
Nat previously dated Eric but they broke up due to a pregnancy scare.
Nat has two sisters: Anya and Christine.
